Ammonium metatungstate hydrate was used as a source of tungsten, during preparation of catalysts, in an experimental procedure conducted, for identifying by-products produced by catalytic dehydration of d-xylose, using two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. It was also used as a complexing agent, found to be advantageous in the depolymerisation of polytungstate anions, and to promote effective arrangement and coordination of nickel around tungsten species, in an experimental study investigating the structure-function relationship of Ni-W sulphide hydrogenation catalysts.
